Sooo Translating Ahmed Matar it is!!!!

Democracy is Democracy even if only 7 people Voted!!!
I'm actually very glad that I will have to translate Matar next. I remember when I first started writing Arabic poetry in Grade 4 alot of political stuff that I lost over the years. They weren't at all good but my family pretended I was Hafiz Ibrahim or something so I got a little bit of a "Poet's ego". So my mom came to me one day and she was like of look I wrote a poem too want to hear? And I thought why not! then she started reciting Ahmed Matar's poetry and I thought to myself ah-oh this is really really good and this her first attempt :S :S However to maintain my ego I said it was fine but she needed to work on it. This is when she reveled to me it was actually Matar's work and I was quite embarrassed so I took that huge book of poetry and I read his sarcastic poems and I was really amazed. I tried to model my poems from then on after his and I failed. His poems were such a large part of my life and I love all Iraqis because of him. Anyways fast-forward to 2011 Revolutions Everywhere it seems like Matar's visions are coming true. His most recent poem is a poem for the Syrian Revolution. I found out that he still lives in London I asked everyone I know if they know anyone that could possibly lead me to one of my childhood heroes but alas I found nothing at all!!! One friend jokes A lost Arab in London hmm well you can hang out in Edgware Road and you're bound to run into him. Me being as sad as I am I actually went with my shawarma to Edgware Road still no Ahmed Matar. So if your a stalker, this is my assignment for you. Find me the only man that's ever crushed my ego.
Another thing I don't think too many people read this blog anyways.

This concludes my translation of Ahmed Fouad Negm's Poems

(Your Eyes) عنيكي

English Translation

Your eyes…and your eyes are a travelling voyage
In the desert….and in the oasis
And the longing….sleepless is this world
Neither to slumber…nor to rest
The darkened eyelashes no longer
Call out for the promised

And me, your amorous flirtation sent me to heaven
I drank, there, from the rivers of honey
loved for ages
And me, I lay sleepless many a night, for you
And the people of this world call out to the night

I returned to that travelling voyage
In the desert
And in the oasis

And I call for the night
And for every lover there is the night
O destined heaven
Who came by and asked for us?
Who from our successors cared?
For the roses
From that moment, we were together
Passion is hardship
I returned to that travelling voyage
In the desert
And in the oasis
In your eyes

( Who are they and who are we?) هما مين و إحنا مين?

English Translation

Who are they and who are we?
They are the princes and the Sultans
They are the ones with wealth and power
And we are the impoverished and deprived
Use your mind, guess…
Guess who is governing whom?
Who are they and who are we?
We are the constructing, we are the workers
We are Al-Sunna, We are Al-Fard
We are the people both height and breadth
From our health, the land raises
And by our sweat, the meadows turn green
Use your mind, guess…
Guess who serves whom?
Who are they and who are we?
They are the princes and the Sultans
They are the mansions and the cars
And the selected women
Consumerist animals
Their job is only to stuff their guts
Use your mind, guess…
Guess who is eating whom?
Who are they and who are we?
We are the war, its stones and fire
We are the army liberating the land
We are the martyrs
Defeated or successful
Use your mind, guess…
Guess who is killing whom?
Who are they and who are we?
They are the princes and the Sultans
They are mere images behind the music
They are the men of politics
Naturally, with blank brains
But with colorful decorative images
Use your mind, guess…
Guess who is betraying whom?
Who are they and who are we?
They are the princes and the Sultans
They wear the latest fashions
But we live seven in a single room
They eat beef and chicken
And we eat nothing but beans
They walk around in private planes
We get crammed in buses
Their lives are nice and flowery
They’re one specie; we are another
Use your mind, guess…
Guess who will defeat whom?

(What’s wrong with our president?) ماله الريس?

English Translation

I never fret, and will always say
A word, for which, I am responsible
That the president is a compassionate man
Constantly, busy working for his people
Busy, gathering their money
Outside, in Switzerland, saving it for us
In secret bank accounts
Poor guy, looking out for our future
Can’t you see his kindly heart?
In faith and good conscience
He only starves you; so you’d lose the weight
O what a people! In need of a diet
O the ignorance! You talk of “unemployment”
And how condition have become dysfunctional
The man just wants to see you rested
Since when was rest such a burden???
And this talk of the resorts
Why do they call them political prisons??
Why do you have to be so suspicious?
He just wants you to have some fun
With regards to “The Chair[1]”
It is without a doubt
All our fault!!
Couldn’t we buy him a Taflon Chair?
I swear, you mistreated the poor man
He wasted his life away, and for what?
Even your food, he eats it for you!
Devouring all that’s in his way
After all this, what’s wrong with our president?

(We support your Excellency) نؤيد سيادتك لفترة جديدة

English Translation

We support your Excellency for another term
In which we will continue the happy march
Maybe we can sell the curb
As there is nothing more one can sell

We support your Excellency to achieve more
Than what has already been accomplished under your reign for sure
We are now at last under the mercy of God
And God alone can have mercy on us

We pledge allegiance to your Excellency and no one else
It’s quite enough for us to swarm in your luxury
The people of Egypt are sound asleep
Which tells the thieves, to steal on

We pledge allegiance to your Excellency, your son and his son
There is nothing like an old idea renewed
Our ruin will be at his hand
And as if anyone in you hears to Al-Adhan

We kiss both your hands and feet
Stay with us, Mr. President
Your presence is essential, enforced by the times
Without your presence, we’ll be really lost

Egypt is yours and we are just guests
It’s enough for us to see your face
We excuse your Excellency, we understand your circumstances
You just need to order, we’ll oblige

Your dogs kiss your Excellency’s feet
They, walk above the impoverished
Now the people’s lives, your Excellency, have become
Humiliation, bitterness and insults

As long as we are the people of affiliation
And constantly in a state of absent-mindedness
Don’t pay us in any attention
This is your Excellency’s manor, and in it you are free

Constitution, what constitution? It no longer matters
It’s all nonsense
Isn’t it enough that the corruption sucks
Our hard work, it is nesting and its roots are growing

So what, if the devastation torment us
Daily, catastrophes, scandals, and bribes
We will just sit in the Cafes
Waiting for your heir to follow

(They're Shia, We are Sunni) دا شيعه واحنا سنه

English Translation

They are Shia
We are Sunni
They are nowhere near Egypt
They want to confuse us

Some say they are communists
Pretending to be Shia
The fear, naturally is,
That it’d be twice a revolution

O Mister Crook
We read in the Book
If the people are under threat
To hell with both sects

We read in the Book
That Religion is accountability,
Revolution and belonging
And an eye for an eye

You stole our revolution
And said patience is bliss
Which will result in paradise
And a door with two keys

And so your power escalated
And with you, sin circulated
You made two Islams
You deemed The Imam[1], a heretic
You drove away the doves
To conclude this talk

Yazid[2] or Al Hussein[3]??

[1] Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib
[2] Yazid, the founder of the first hereditary dynasty in Islamic history, the Ummayads
[3] Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet.

(The Hummingbird's Prayer) دعاء الكروان

English Translation

In your marvel, the heavens orbit
The years are long
But how cautious are you!
You that attach the soul to life
Love is yours, eternity is yours!

Annihilation! To those that know you not
O people! O spirit of eternity
Power is yours, eternity is yours!

The night is your solution
As the morning unravels
And the thirsty sea is weary
The arrow strayed
Shot the thirsty
You’re the decent, but we inquire

Judas betrayed, but how many Judases sold Christ?
Judas could not last forever
And you cannot wound a wounded country
A million Judases betrayed the promise and were defeated
You are all that remains
In the fields
And your sickle
Brushed the wheat from above Christ’s blood
And you are the wounded
The doctors come to ask
How grand!
Who fathered you?!
Who bore you?!
How noble!
O people, you are the heartbeat of existence.
Eternity is yours
Sovereignty is yours
Power is yours
Power is yours

(The beginning of our talk) أول كلام

English Translation

The beginning of our talk
The talk about Iran
Surely has no place
In a treacherous media

And the Americans’ voices
Softened, the informants can see
That the poor guy is terrified

If it is recurrent on every lip
And humming in each ear
Words about the treachery
And about the hungered populace

They will issue a conviction
Against the Shah
A conviction would mean revolution
So, don’t accept debate
Can’t uncover the veils
To bring about his complete humiliation

So why would the informants agree
To let anyone oppose
They’re all sick anyways
And the majority is hungry

This is the way
Ignoring the truth
So the people would
Drown
In hallucination

For this reason
And that
We will walk into the barbed wires
And we will walk from Al Zamalek
And end up in Al Torgoman
Our word, we will say it
Milk from the father’s bosoms

So the talk was forgotten
So words were parroted

So lend me your ears
I’ll tell you, and you tell me
Ignore all idle chatter
Let’s talk
About Iran

(The Nile is Thirsty) النيل عطشان

English Translation

O maidens, the Nile is thirsty
For love and with nostalgia
The shore has
No light
Not a single breeze
No neys
No jasmines

O Shahinda[1], tell us your story
O Mother, with a desolate voice
O Mother, with eyes as green as fields
In them, gallops the steed
How is Al-Qanater Prison[2]?
How are the imprisoners?
How are your comrades in prison?

O light of the meadows
O Egypt, you are full of the imprisoned
And your clothing is all
Prison cells

And your spacious farmlands
Narrowed down entrapping the peasants
The smoke of chimneys
Is the same color of the workers

O young girls of the Nile
Captured by the whips of the lashers
In this age, there is no Antarah[3]
But there are a million knights
Whom calculate their steps
Their roads parallel to the law
But when the moment comes
They ride the dragon’s back
Destroys the barriers
And unshackle all prisoners

(The Strike) الإضراب

English Translation

In the name of the People’s God
God of the strikers,
The fasting,
The deprived
All through the years

Chanters of the town
Come, chant of our town
We are here
Loyal as always to the promise

How sweet are the poems?
In times of bitter hardship…and the songs
How sweet are the spoken words of love?
In times of privation

We are the ones who lost the way and
Each other
Scattered
But in prison we shall meet
Aah[1], comrades!
From the road’s labyrinth
When in the night,
The moon is strangled
When a friend walks
In the darkness
Colliding into his friend
And the journey is born from just two steps
But takes a year

Where are we today?
And how many are we?
How many will we be tomorrow?
And where will we be at?
Each day we visit a place
Our numbers grow

Each day
We open doors
And each day
We destroy obstacles
Each day
We set up buildings
Each day
We remove rubble
Each day
We’re impregnated with chants
Each day

We give birth to Madad[2]

We must be this way
Inside the prisons
Outside the prisons
How sweet are the poems?
In times of bitter hardship…and the songs
How wondrous is that green stem?
In the spring of ruins
We are the ones who lost the way and
Each other
Together
We handwrite a page from the book

Cursed are the backs that bow in shame
To the leader of a government and the khan
Cursed are the words that dwell in the throat
Only to escape the expression of the tongue
Cursed is every moment of a life
That is riddled with subservience
Cursed is every piece of bread drowned in humiliation
Curse the coward

O comrades!
You who taught solid strength to stones
I call for you
In the midst of depression
Monotony….and boredom

You, who are nearer to dawn,
To its light and rise
Gather the sound
In the mosques
And Listen up
The chanting scream of a town that has awoke from oblivion
Unite!
Unite!
Unite!

(On your seventy something birthday) في عيد ميلادك الكام وسبعين

English Translation

Mister President
On your seventy something birthday
Happy Birthday
Although it is not a very happy day for us
And every year you are the sovereign
And we are your subjects,
We are the oppressed,
We are the humiliated,

I wonder, O sweetheart of millions
Do you still remember us, or are we forgotten?
Do you recall your political prisoners?
Or the hungry
Do you remember the displaced?
Do you remember those that were burnt to death?
Or those that drowned to their demise[1]
May God be with you,
How much do we expect you to remember?
On your seventy something birthday
I’ll say a couple of words

First
We carry filth on our backs
Do you know that The Nile is infested?
And the air is polluted, and life is hell
And the hearts of the honest are raging
You are massacring them
The economy is in shambles
And you legitimize thuggery
You say: Egypt just needs a little more tourism
But all the land here is for sale

Second
Woe betides us
To walk one step, during your reign, is to walk a mile
And laughter has become sobs and wails
And the vegetables
Do you know about the vegetables?
Well I can write books about all that’s wrong with them
And the universities have either become nightclubs or old age homes
And the youth have become drunkards, without alcohol!
And knowledge has become a burden on the educated
And the teachers have become imposters
All the leaders have become your personal orchestra
Take me to my ruin, O sweetheart of millions!

Third
Do you know the Japanese?
Long ago, in nineteen fifty two[2]
We had our own cars; we had education and the educated
We had a culture and the cultured
And literature, science and many artists
The Japanese
Were recovering from a nuclear attack
What now have they become, and what have we?

Fourth
The country’s well-being is guarded by a dragon
And the courts are filled with injustices
That’s your justice in its perfection
Where word of truth is discarded
And those that say it rot in cells

Fifth
The public sector …. Public?
And corruption prevailed
Devouring the corpses of my country
What more can I say, your majesty?
Each memory has its tears
I swore to myself
To write seventy eight memories
But I can’t afford the paper
So happy birthday to you
And to us

(O Palestine) يا فلسطينية

English Translation

O Palestinian, the gunman threw you out
With Zionism your doves were murdered in your arms
O Palestinian, I want travel to your land
With fire in my hands, and my hands in your hands
Against the serpent. And death to the ways of Hulagu[1]!

O Palestinian, you have been away from your homeland for too long
And in the deserts, you are the refugees and victims
The land misses its peasants and its streams of water
Revolution is your end, and victory is the first step!

O Palestinian the revolution is certain
With rifles we will force a new life
No matter how long the road maybe
Rapid footsteps will heal you

O Palestinian, Vietnam is your good luck charm
Victorious she rose from a hundred thousand incursions
The candle is lit and the whole situation was lost[2]
They went back confused, may this happen to you too!!

(O Maidens I am Thirsty) عطشان يا صبايا

English Translation

O young maidens, I am thirsty
I am a lover…on the highway
Thirsty
And the water in my country
Runs in opposite direction to The Nile
And the palm trees are elastic
And the roots are shallow
And humiliated
And the wind blows in opposite directions
Repressing
And the breeze changed color to the muddy dirt
From the peoples’ troubles
O dear friend
I am thirsty and The Nile is in my country
And the grass is green
And pretty
Yesterday, I used to be free
But this day today
I have become riddled with repression
Thirsty…My love is the only cure
I drink from passion a testament
And the testament of love is works
And the talk of love is passionate

Each time I intend repentance
I am seduced by the past
It harvests in the heart’s gardens
And the young birds hatch
Lovers, O nesting pigeons!
And we have no other alternative
It’s a path and we are destined
To walk
Generation after Generation
On thorns
We enforce our footsteps
The lanterns illuminate
Around us, the hearts of the lovers
Our minds, with us is testament
And the sun is dripping droplets
And the source
Is the Nile River
And if they put the blame on us
Let them
We will not be walking for them
What is “the thorns of passion”?
But blame.
And thorns
Are essential to the original rose
Take me along that path
Take me along that path

(My Beloved People) شعبي حبيبي

English Translation

My beloved people, my soul, my babies
Like a ring around my finger, you are
My good people, you who give me fulfillment
Living in the graveyards[1] patiently and content
You, who eat poison and sell your clothes just to get by

You, who bear burdens and carry mountains,
My people, doomed and asleep
Swimming in poverty, and your situation is quite a situation

I like you to be stoned, strung-out and careless
Dizzy, and high as hell
I like you to be empty headed, and doped up
Not handling the matters of your own life at all

I like those that plunder, I like those that lie
I like those that pillage and rob heaps
I like those that see, know, and fear
And swallow their tongues and never say a word
I like the imbeciles that keep their eyes shut
I like the animals and the mules
I like those that are satisfied, I like those that are idle
I like those that just want to raise the kids
I like the desperate; I like the depressed
I like the frustrated that see the impossible
I like you to travel, to emigrate far
And send back money in dollars and Riyals
I like you to clap, party and cheer
For a football match, a movie, or a tabloid
I like you to support, revere, idolize
To accept, to be hypocritical, and to lick my shoes clean
To prepare the smelling salts, and to assemble the cadres
To wash, to scrub, and to assemble meetings

But, if you want to think, plan, or decide
If you start using your mind and to open up debates
If you start to create problems
And to search for things and to ask questions
And you want to enlighten and you want to improve
As though you were the man of the hour

In that case, I will find you, never let you go
And I will make you an example for all to see
And your torment will be beyond belief
I will shame and name you
And destroy your dignity
You will get framed for crimes
And live for the rest of your life in exile

If you agree, I’ll like
If you don’t I’ll lash you
Rise or fall you’ll end up with Gamal[2]
Rise or fall you’ll end up with Gamal

[1] This is not a metaphor, because of the housing crisis many of the urban poor set up large communities in the graveyards.
[2] Gamal Mubarak, the president’s son, believed to be groomed for presidency.

(The Prison in the Castle) سجن القلعة

English Translation

The devotees gathered in the castle’s prison[1]
The devotees gathered in Bab Al-Khalq[2]
And the sun is a chant, rising from the prison cells
And Egypt is a chant, rising from the throat
The devotees gathered in the cell
No matter the length of imprisonment; no matter the oppression
No matter the despotism of the imprisoner
Who could ever dare imprison Egypt?
They gathered with devotion, a fire in their blood
A fire that burns hunger, tears and torment
A fire that burns when the feet are clinched
When the hands boil from picking up the meat
And the meat is scattered in the Sinai sand[3]
And the liar is constraining our arms
The enemies foot is stabbing my sand’s flesh
The liar landed informants at my door
And the informants let loose their hungered vicious dogs
They gather the devotees to the prison cell
Egypt is the morning the frees us to the roads
Egypt is the tears; Egypt is the tunes and the mud
Egypt is the suns emerging from the prison cells
Emerging and growing orchards in our blood
Egypt is the garden, but who will pick its fruit?
Egypt is the garden to those who will raise their swords
No matter the length of imprisonment; no matter the oppression
No matter the despotism of the imprisoner
Who could ever dare imprison Egypt?

[1] During Anwar El Sadat’s presidency, the underground room in the citadel of Saladin in Egypt was turned into a political prison.
[2] A Court that dealt with Political Prisoners
[3] Referring to the’73 war between Egypt and Israel over Sinai.

(Morning Ascended) طلع الصباح

English Translation

Morning has ascended, with its entire splendor in ascent
The light dazzled the kohl in our eyes by its charm
And the bird warbled to the lord almighty
Beautiful tunes to refresh the sorrowed heart
Good Morning to all you workers

The sun has ascended with the smile of hope
As a flame of rubies like the blushing cheeks
It says, “You who are sleeping, it’s time to works”
The worlds’ bounty and pride is for the hardworking
Good Morning to all you workers

Sons of our homeland from its south to the east
You, with your sleeves rolled up
The light has embraced our country
And the sun has ascended with confidence in the hardworking
Good Morning to all you workers

Morning has ascended, with its entire splendor in ascent
The light dazzled the kohl in our eyes by its charm
And the bird warbled to the lord almighty
Beautiful tunes to refresh the sorrowed heart
Good Morning to all you workers

يسعد صباحكم كلكم يا شغالين

English Translation

If the sun drowns in a sea of clouds

(Erect your Forts) شيد قصورك

English Translation

Erect your fortresses on our farmland
With our hard labour and toil
The Taverns are alongside the factories
And the prisons are in place of the parks
Let loose your dogs
On our streets
And Lock us
In your prison cells
In the beds, our slumber dwindled
Now we sleep
To our content
The burden of ache was too heavy
We’ve been injured
And now we’ve had enough
Now we know
Who is behind our agony.
We now know ourselves
And we are assembled
Workers, Peasants
And Students
Our clock has ticked
So we begin
To walk the road
Of no return
And victory is nearer to our eyes
And victory
Is near our hands.

English Translation

Name: Saber[1]

Despite my old, grey plaits
That flow downwards unto my waist
Occupation: The heir
Of my forefathers
And of the ages
Creator of civilizations,
Enlightenment
And security
Skin: Brown
Hair: Rougher than hay
Eye colour: Deep black
Nose: Flaring like a steed
Mouth: Fixed in its place
If one tries to move it

Place of Birth: In any dark room
Beneath the skies
In any home surrounded

As long as it’s not a mansion
Sentence: For seven thousand years
I lay here, a prisoner
Grinding the rocks in between my teeth
O the idleness
I spend my nights here, in gloom
Reasons: Asked, I was,
For what reason?
Has your confinement been prolonged
Because I am of kind spirit
And of geniality
I committed, not even an infringement upon the law
Because I am afraid
And because law has its sword
Ask the informants
And they’ll tell you my story
From beginning to end
By name I am patient even in the face of Job’s calamities
I am a donkey
Carrying my share of burdens
And awaiting
I drown in rivers of sweat
During the lengthy morn
I pack my grievances by nightfall
Then, on them I rest
Now you know why?

(Man Son of Man) رجل ابن رجل

The mule told the donkey
Father, give me the cart

Father, you’re old
And it’s my turn

The donkey coughed a cough
That startled the passengers

Son, it’s not to do with health
For everything, there is a reason

The cart’s driver
Needs someone wise

And you have empty eyes
All you care about is food

Tell me how you’ll drive
When hay fills your eyes

Even the bridle, my son
Is too big for you

Calm down, and stop being greedy
Don’t anger the passengers

Don’t come near them
Or this night will be hell

They’re the vicious kind
Able, and not to be trusted

They may seem feeble
But they’re knights

O father, their sleep is deep
It has been so, for years

All other humans woke
And those they are still asleep

Mule, stop being absurd
And don’t live in arrogance

They’re not stupid
And their bones aren’t weak

One day they’ll wake
And remove waggle this cart

And you’ll find in your neck
Eighty spikes wedged

(I Swear to you) عليا الحرنكش

English Translation

I swear to you, President Mubarak
In this ornamented age, designed by your fire
I will vote for you, your regime, and even your donkey
Curse anyone that defies your decisions
His morning will be hell and his night will be Mubarak
So have your fun; try to kill our faith
Our faith is lost upon watching Gamal
You’re (Gamal) beauty is (Mubarak) blessed ; Your Suzanne is our Suzanne
How grand is that siege you have on Egypt!
The country in which each breeze now grills our corpses
I support and vote for your Excellency, your majesty
And I will even pledge support to those that wipe your drools
We’ll forget your idiocy since you justify it by deceit
Relax Mr. President; play with “your dove”
The dove of peace is your dove
Bless your dove and bless you
Dear Mr. President you are the dove of peace
On the hills of Egypt have your fun
Roam the dumps, like a stray
And order us around, we will oblige
Your people are tired and breathless

1 Pun intended; Gamal means beauty. Gamal is also Mubarak’s son.
2 Pun intended; Mubarak means blessed.
3 Suzanne is Hosni Mubarak’s wife.

(Guevara is Dead) جيفارا مات

English Translation

Guevara is Dead
Guevara is dead
Guevara is dead
Latest news, on the radios
In the churches
In the mosques
In the allies
On the roads
And in the cafés and in the bars
Guevara is dead
A chain of conversations and comments opened up
*********
The militant role model is dead
What a great loss for all men
Died above his cannon, inside the jungles
Impersonating his struggle with his death
And quietly…
No drums, No sounds
No propaganda
*********
What do you think?
You, with your wealth and your antics
All dressed up and fed
All warmed up
You and your new-age stylish struggle
In the floaters1
What do you think?
You, with your wealth
Guevara is dead
No humming
No propaganda
In his moment of demise
With none of his comrades to bid farewell
His screams ascended to the heavens
Shouting, but who would listen?
He may have hollered with pain
From a sting of fire in his gut
Or smiled
Or shuddered
Or was soused
He may have uttered one last farewell
To the hungered
Maybe it was a testament to those who adopted the cause
To fight on
Images inhibited my mind
With a million different possibilities
It is however without debate
Guevara died the death of men

You, the working, the deprived
Shackled
Feet and head
Salvation, Salvation
You can’t be salvaged
Without rifles and bullets
That’s the logic of this happy century
The Yankee century
Where the word is fire and steel
and justice is either cowardly or mute
Guevara’s screams! You slaves!
In any homeland and in every place
There is no alternative
And no other way
Prepare the armies already
Or tell the world
That’s the end.

1 He is referring to Abd al-naser. At the time the intellectual left criticized him for the 6 day war.

Abjd Hos…Huti Kalmn
Turn the page…Hold the pen
Write it down, the way it’s pronounced
Saigon has fallen; they raised the flags
*******
The sun has risen; today is a day for songs
Every time we hear them; again we fall in love
The sun has risen; this day today is a fire
That heals the wounds, and relieves the pain
*******
Saigon has returned to the revolutionaries
Over the blood and beneath the fire
As hard work brings its worth; the seeds they sowed now they reap
But we, we gave ourselves away to the brokers
And when the brokers talk
To all the brokers’ narrations, we oblige
The pimps read the talk
With caution and in alert
*******
They talked and talked with an imposing voice
About America, and America’s might
They claimed it, a phantom, the carrier of death
The fort collapsed with America’s flag
Shame on you, you superficial class
Claiming intellect, but bringing shame
Talkative brokers
Your deal is done

(Cow) بقرة حاحا

English Translation

All the sobbing weepers wept
At the fate of the fighting cow
And that cow is milch; she exudes a gallon’s milk
But she is robbed; by the members of her own house
And the house has its owners and eleven doors
And underground tunnels and a sea of wolves
The ogres of the house stand by day
But on a known set date; the Romans did the deed
They pushed the locks; the guards fled
The outsiders came and sucked the milk
And the cow yells and screams “O My Children”
But the children of shame, were fast asleep
The cow was oppressed, by oppression, overwhelmed
She fell into the well; the bystanders asked
“Well, why did she fall?”
She fell from fear
“From where does this fear come?”
It comes from blindness
She fell because of hunger and because of idleness
That dark fighting cow
The crying tunes of the weeper wept
At the fate of the fighting cow

Forbidden from longing
Forbidden from discontent

And every day with your love

And every day I love you
More than the before

My love, as if a vessel
Longing and imprisoned
With an informant in each corner
A police in every port
They forbid me if I
Feel some jealousy for you
Or if I fly to your embrace
Or if I sleep in your lap
And your heart like the spring
I return like an infant
Weeping from weaning

My love, as if city
Dressed up and unhappy
In every road a difficulty
And in every palace decoration
Forbidden from waking up
With your love, or sleeping with it
Forbidden from debate
Forbidden from silence
And every day with your love
That which is forbidden increases
And every day I love you

(Bow Your Head) طاطي راسك طاطي

English Translation

Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country
We bless you with freedom
Under the condition that you bow

If you work with integrity
Fearful for the fate of society
Your work will be riddled with futility
Because only the lowly can rise
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When its defenders are its thieves
And they throw the country behind their backs
Devouring all that’s in their way
Protected by an officer’s uniform
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When you’re hard earned is not yours
Poverty blocking all your paths
You turn to look around
Only to find thieves and crooks
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When you find in other lands
That a human being is something else
You are in an underclass
Like a chained monkey or a bat
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When the ignorant are ahead of you
Or above you, holding you by a leash
And drive you to your ruin
And you drink from the Socratic poison
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When only a word convicts you
When you hide within your heart your faith
When I see the humiliation in your eyes
Add your frustrations to my frustrations
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

(Alexandria) اسكندريه

English Translation

O Alexandria
Your sea is full of wonders
If only I could be loved...by you??
I’m thrown by a wave
On the bosom of another wave
And the sea is wild
And fishing is plentiful
I wash my clothes
I hang my clothes?
And reveal my worries
On a rising sun
And in it, I’m melting
As though a peasant in Orabi’s[1] army
Who died on the cannon fort
And disappeared in your seas
As though a breeze above the hills
Arriving from the sea
Drowning in your enchantment
As though I were a word from Bayram’s[2] mind
As though I were a song from Sayyed’s[3] heart
As though I were a student within a protest
Chanting in your name
And died repeating
As though I were Nadim’s[4] voice
In your night
Awakening your people
So they can gather your strength
As though I were one stone from a house in an alley
As though I were a teardrop
In the eye of the sleepless
As though I were a star above the lighthouse
Calming the troubled
And the full moon is absent
O Alexandria
O People of Egypt
On a toothed smile
On the girl’s smile
The sea
Fishnets and bays
And you, the princess
Coming out to the world
O Alexandria, the passionate

And Badwi[5]
Slept in your arms
Amiable and affectionate
My words will be
A lover’s token
And with love
We give and take
O Alexandria, you’re full of the unfortunate
Who strive for their livelihood but barely sleep
Their mornings start
Their evenings return
And their hardships increase
Never relieved
O, the past that has exhausted them
And their effort lost
Never met
Their fishnets descended
On a barren sea
Their fishnets were empty
Alexandria, amidst your people
Wolves
Alexandria, above your people
Beasts
Alexandria, and you have men
In love with young maidens
If betrayed by their times
They never betray
Alexandria, amidst you the vinous
I gave up
I can no longer see it
This, without tarnishing it
Fish my Alexandrian boy
In passion, it is one
You have no other
Fish my Alexandrian boy
In harmony, he is a magician and an entertainer
Fish, my boy
Passion is a wish
It starts with a glance (that starts with a glance)
And becomes a romance
And every lover has his beauty
And every poet has his song
And me, my love for the maidens
I love and sing
My love I cannot conceal
And any glance can draw my attention
Imagine what your eyes can do to me
O dark beauty

(El Mesahraty) المسحراتي

English Translation

The days were enceinte with years
The days gave birth to eternities
For whom does this world last
Only for the Lord the forgiving
Pray to the one, whom on Judgment day, will forgive you
Awaken, ye who slumbered from pain
Identify the roots of your pain
What’s preventing you?
Call out to those who will listen
Call out and say
O neighbors
No matter how long and tedious the night is
Every crime that goes around and comes around
Like the orbiting planets
Pray that God is one, ye faithful
Rise from your slumber, ye forgetful
Rise from your slumber, ye understanding
O lovers of Egypt, my family, my people
You who are sleepless with passion will always suffer
Enough! Awaken! Ye who are sleeping
Unite mankind with me
The night has long been resting
The mournful are nervous
Pray that God is one, ye faithful
You, who are awake in your homes,
You, who unveiled the charade,
You, who can hear the silence,
You, who have been long awake,
Prepare for the rise
Prepare for the rise
Accept from me, my words
Egypt has been asleep for years
Pray that God is one, ye faithful

1- El Mesahraty is traditionally a man who wakes up people in Ramadan to eat before the fasting day begins.

(Important Announcement) بيان هام

English Translation

This is an announcement
Radio station “Splendor of the Past”
From Cairo to Kurdufan
And from the rest of the Arab World and Japan
And from Venezuela and also Iran
And from any home
Or brutalized land
Because of Yankee tourism

This is an announcement
Radio station “Splendor of the Past”
We present to you in every language
Plays, cinema, and every art form
Journalism, debates and televisions
Sermons in mosques
We jump and ride all the waves
We research and debate all the issues
And always shine in each situation
Even when no one listens or cares
Listen or don’t, we don’t care
We’ll be making a living regardless
So keep it to yourself and don’t make us
Use our pens against you

This is an announcement
Radio station “Splendor of the Past”
It gives the presenters pleasure (and not you)
On this great occasion (to which you’re not invited)
We present to you Shehata the stoner
Unrehearsed
The chief broker in our developing nation
Bribing the card dealers, before each game of poker
Sabotaging the farmland and selling its crops
Now he’s a prince of the army too
You cannot deny
And say you don’t know
Neither can you say you’ve never heard of him
Shehata the stoner, the people’s sweetheart
He can remove the stains, the worries and anguish
Bashed and baked and popping pills
Rambles on and no one understands
Understand or not, we do not care
We know you understand but pretend you don’t
You’ll deny it and swear but I say don’t
Just save everyone the headache

This is an announcement
Radio station “Splendor of the Past”
Because all that’s hidden, has been reveled
And all the matters now appear for all to see
Stories appeared and stories were published
About his smuggling and a lot of talk
About patronage and a degenerate
That appeared like a tornado in town
And sunk ships and devastated fields
More ships are about to sink
There will be housing and security crises
Some will be devouring the flesh of the hungry
And the smell of conspiracy lingers around
Planning treachery with the Americans
To slaughter the clan and burn the place
“Some engage in chatter asking for a broadcast,
As we were told by (the ears )
For this reason and that
We present to you, the people,
Toy candy
I am Shehata the stoner, and this my announcement”

This is an announcement
Radio station “Splendor of the Past”
In the name of Allah
Asslamalliykum
About the given circumstances, they are well and dandy
So brothers and sisters
All the circumstances are as fine as should be
And all the talk is just mere words
So be patient and don’t fret
I do not accept the work of the spiteful
There is absolutely nothing wrong
I swear on my mother’s grave
There is absolutely nothing wrong
And even if there were
There is no use in talking about it
It’s wrong for the youth to be insolent
And to start paying attention and asking for debate
I, myself, despise the large brokers
For the sake of competition
But I am not the type to
Expose
How much a colleague plundered?
Since all the colleagues plunder
And what’s coming in is not
The same as what’s coming out
So citizens, Zion up!
What a morning of stanching odors!
Oh that’s my brother the Prince of Iran
This year, he sent me
An invitation, without a doubt I accepted
I went and what a meal!
A banquet that cannot be honestly repeated
All the delicacies of the finest fried foods
So many plates
My head started spinning
From all his opulence and wealth
There, I didn’t see
Any malevolent characters, giving him look of spite
Or anyone insulting a person
For buying a village or two
Or his entrepreneurial spirit
After the banquet, we received the gifts
With silver and gold and Faience
Of course my brother, the prince, told me something
Which I will repeat all in due time
Some kids, will jump up for no reason
To try to judge me
This is the socialist jealousy that I do not accept
If they were my children, I would punish them
There is talk about brokers and talk about prostitution
All this talk is untrue and fabricated
They want to turn this nation into a whorehouse
They want me to leave the country
I will not give up nor abandon the country
Not by the police nor the prosecution
So citizens, do me a favor
Be patient and riches and wealth will come
You will eat and drink and spend
Until you drown in a sea of slavery and prostitution
And you’ll paint your life as you please
With roads filled with mansions and cathouses
You will pray to God and thank him
For the filth that surrounds you
To conclude this talk
It is essential
That peace and quiet roams, or else!
I will destroy your country, take my money
And leave.
Asslamalliykum
