(What’s wrong with our president?)

English Translation

I never fret, and will always say
A word, for which, I am responsible
That the president is a compassionate man
Constantly, busy working for his people
Busy, gathering their money
Outside, in Switzerland, saving it for us
In secret bank accounts
Poor guy, looking out for our future
Can’t you see his kindly heart?
In faith and good conscience
He only starves you; so you’d lose the weight
O what a people! In need of a diet
O the ignorance! You talk of “unemployment”
And how condition have become dysfunctional
The man just wants to see you rested
Since when was rest such a burden???
And this talk of the resorts
Why do they call them political prisons??
Why do you have to be so suspicious?
He just wants you to have some fun
With regards to “The Chair[1]”
It is without a doubt
All our fault!!
Couldn’t we buy him a Taflon Chair?
I swear, you mistreated the poor man
He wasted his life away, and for what?
Even your food, he eats it for you!
Devouring all that’s in his way
After all this, what’s wrong with our president?

(We support your Excellency)

English Translation

We support your Excellency for another term
In which we will continue the happy march
Maybe we can sell the curb
As there is nothing more one can sell

We support your Excellency to achieve more
Than what has already been accomplished under your reign for sure
We are now at last under the mercy of God
And God alone can have mercy on us

We pledge allegiance to your Excellency and no one else
It’s quite enough for us to swarm in your luxury
The people of Egypt are sound asleep
Which tells the thieves, to steal on

We pledge allegiance to your Excellency, your son and his son
There is nothing like an old idea renewed
Our ruin will be at his hand
And as if anyone in you hears to Al-Adhan

We kiss both your hands and feet
Stay with us, Mr. President
Your presence is essential, enforced by the times
Without your presence, we’ll be really lost

Egypt is yours and we are just guests
It’s enough for us to see your face
We excuse your Excellency, we understand your circumstances
You just need to order, we’ll oblige

Your dogs kiss your Excellency’s feet
They, walk above the impoverished
Now the people’s lives, your Excellency, have become
Humiliation, bitterness and insults

As long as we are the people of affiliation
And constantly in a state of absent-mindedness
Don’t pay us in any attention
This is your Excellency’s manor, and in it you are free

Constitution, what constitution? It no longer matters
It’s all nonsense
Isn’t it enough that the corruption sucks
Our hard work, it is nesting and its roots are growing

So what, if the devastation torment us
Daily, catastrophes, scandals, and bribes
We will just sit in the Cafes
Waiting for your heir to follow

(On your seventy something birthday)

English Translation

Mister President
On your seventy something birthday
Happy Birthday
Although it is not a very happy day for us
And every year you are the sovereign
And we are your subjects,
We are the oppressed,
We are the humiliated,

I wonder, O sweetheart of millions
Do you still remember us, or are we forgotten?
Do you recall your political prisoners?
Or the hungry
Do you remember the displaced?
Do you remember those that were burnt to death?
Or those that drowned to their demise[1]
May God be with you,
How much do we expect you to remember?
On your seventy something birthday
I’ll say a couple of words

First
We carry filth on our backs
Do you know that The Nile is infested?
And the air is polluted, and life is hell
And the hearts of the honest are raging
You are massacring them
The economy is in shambles
And you legitimize thuggery
You say: Egypt just needs a little more tourism
But all the land here is for sale

Second
Woe betides us
To walk one step, during your reign, is to walk a mile
And laughter has become sobs and wails
And the vegetables
Do you know about the vegetables?
Well I can write books about all that’s wrong with them
And the universities have either become nightclubs or old age homes
And the youth have become drunkards, without alcohol!
And knowledge has become a burden on the educated
And the teachers have become imposters
All the leaders have become your personal orchestra
Take me to my ruin, O sweetheart of millions!

Third
Do you know the Japanese?
Long ago, in nineteen fifty two[2]
We had our own cars; we had education and the educated
We had a culture and the cultured
And literature, science and many artists
The Japanese
Were recovering from a nuclear attack
What now have they become, and what have we?

Fourth
The country’s well-being is guarded by a dragon
And the courts are filled with injustices
That’s your justice in its perfection
Where word of truth is discarded
And those that say it rot in cells

Fifth
The public sector …. Public?
And corruption prevailed
Devouring the corpses of my country
What more can I say, your majesty?
Each memory has its tears
I swore to myself
To write seventy eight memories
But I can’t afford the paper
So happy birthday to you
And to us

[1] This refers to the incident when a ferry owned by Mamdouh Ismail, an NDP politician and businessman, sank. The ferry was on fire, some died in the fire, some jumped and drowned and some were swallowed by sharks.

(My Beloved People) شعبي حبيبي

English Translation

My beloved people, my soul, my babies
Like a ring around my finger, you are
My good people, you who give me fulfillment
Living in the graveyards[1] patiently and content
You, who eat poison and sell your clothes just to get by

You, who bear burdens and carry mountains,
My people, doomed and asleep
Swimming in poverty, and your situation is quite a situation

I like you to be stoned, strung-out and careless
Dizzy, and high as hell
I like you to be empty headed, and doped up
Not handling the matters of your own life at all

I like those that plunder, I like those that lie
I like those that pillage and rob heaps
I like those that see, know, and fear
And swallow their tongues and never say a word
I like the imbeciles that keep their eyes shut
I like the animals and the mules
I like those that are satisfied, I like those that are idle
I like those that just want to raise the kids
I like the desperate; I like the depressed
I like the frustrated that see the impossible
I like you to travel, to emigrate far
And send back money in dollars and Riyals
I like you to clap, party and cheer
For a football match, a movie, or a tabloid
I like you to support, revere, idolize
To accept, to be hypocritical, and to lick my shoes clean
To prepare the smelling salts, and to assemble the cadres
To wash, to scrub, and to assemble meetings

But, if you want to think, plan, or decide
If you start using your mind and to open up debates
If you start to create problems
And to search for things and to ask questions
And you want to enlighten and you want to improve
As though you were the man of the hour

In that case, I will find you, never let you go
And I will make you an example for all to see
And your torment will be beyond belief
I will shame and name you
And destroy your dignity
You will get framed for crimes
And live for the rest of your life in exile

If you agree, I’ll like
If you don’t I’ll lash you
Rise or fall you’ll end up with Gamal[2]
Rise or fall you’ll end up with Gamal

[1] This is not a metaphor, because of the housing crisis many of the urban poor set up large communities in the graveyards.
[2] Gamal Mubarak, the president’s son, believed to be groomed for presidency.

(Man Son of Man) رجل ابن رجل

The mule told the donkey
Father, give me the cart

Father, you’re old
And it’s my turn

The donkey coughed a cough
That startled the passengers

Son, it’s not to do with health
For everything, there is a reason

The cart’s driver
Needs someone wise

And you have empty eyes
All you care about is food

Tell me how you’ll drive
When hay fills your eyes

Even the bridle, my son
Is too big for you

Calm down, and stop being greedy
Don’t anger the passengers

Don’t come near them
Or this night will be hell

They’re the vicious kind
Able, and not to be trusted

They may seem feeble
But they’re knights

O father, their sleep is deep
It has been so, for years

All other humans woke
And those they are still asleep

Mule, stop being absurd
And don’t live in arrogance

They’re not stupid
And their bones aren’t weak

One day they’ll wake
And remove waggle this cart

And you’ll find in your neck
Eighty spikes wedged

(I Swear to you) عليا الحرنكش

English Translation

I swear to you, President Mubarak
In this ornamented age, designed by your fire
I will vote for you, your regime, and even your donkey
Curse anyone that defies your decisions
His morning will be hell and his night will be Mubarak
So have your fun; try to kill our faith
Our faith is lost upon watching Gamal
You’re (Gamal) beauty is (Mubarak) blessed ; Your Suzanne is our Suzanne
How grand is that siege you have on Egypt!
The country in which each breeze now grills our corpses
I support and vote for your Excellency, your majesty
And I will even pledge support to those that wipe your drools
We’ll forget your idiocy since you justify it by deceit
Relax Mr. President; play with “your dove”
The dove of peace is your dove
Bless your dove and bless you
Dear Mr. President you are the dove of peace
On the hills of Egypt have your fun
Roam the dumps, like a stray
And order us around, we will oblige
Your people are tired and breathless

1 Pun intended; Gamal means beauty. Gamal is also Mubarak’s son.
2 Pun intended; Mubarak means blessed.
3 Suzanne is Hosni Mubarak’s wife.

(Bow Your Head)

English Translation

Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country
We bless you with freedom
Under the condition that you bow

If you work with integrity
Fearful for the fate of society
Your work will be riddled with futility
Because only the lowly can rise
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When its defenders are its thieves
And they throw the country behind their backs
Devouring all that’s in their way
Protected by an officer’s uniform
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When you’re hard earned is not yours
Poverty blocking all your paths
You turn to look around
Only to find thieves and crooks
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When you find in other lands
That a human being is something else
You are in an underclass
Like a chained monkey or a bat
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When the ignorant are ahead of you
Or above you, holding you by a leash
And drive you to your ruin
And you drink from the Socratic poison
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country

When only a word convicts you
When you hide within your heart your faith
When I see the humiliation in your eyes
Add your frustrations to my frustrations
Bow your head, bow
You are in a democratic country
